Play & download

Start with a low volume: a tone can be much louder than it seems and can hurt your ears or damage speakers.

How to use the tone generator

Choose the frequencyType a frequency in Hz or move the slider. The nearest musical note is shown next to it. You can change it while the tone plays.
Choose the waveSine is the purest sound. Square, sawtooth and triangle waves are brighter because they contain more harmonics.
Keep the volume lowStart quietly and raise it slowly. Very low and very high tones can be loud without sounding like it.
DownloadSet the length in seconds and download the tone as MP3 or WAV, for tests, sound design or tuning.

440 Hz is the A4 reference used to tune instruments, and 1,000 Hz is the classic test tone. The human ear hears from about 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, although most adults do not hear above 15 to 17 kHz. Small speakers, phones and laptops often cannot play tones below about 100 Hz.
